About Course

Know the System Before Day One

You were hired for your skill, your experience, and your commitment to students. Now you are stepping into a school system that may look very different from the one you know. The U.S. Education System gives international teachers a clear, practical map of how American schools work, so you can walk in with confidence and make choices with intention.

What You Will Do

  • Watch the core lesson on how U.S. schools are governed and organized: federal, state, district, and school roles.
  • Learn how nearly 99,000 public schools are shaped by local control, and why requirements differ from state to state.
  • Understand the legal basics every teacher needs: IEPs, 504 Plans, and English learner supports, including what you must do and when.
  • Work through two realistic scenarios and plan your response before seeing the recommended approach.
  • Complete your Participant Workbook (fillable PDF), a quiz, and a First-Week Checklist and Day One Survival Guide you can use immediately.

How Long It Takes

Plan for about 2 hours: the video lesson, the workbook reflections, and the quiz. Go at your own pace and return to the workbook as often as you like.

Who It Is For

International and early-career teachers, J-1 visa educators, and anyone preparing to teach in a U.S. K-12 classroom.
